Uses for Brown Granulated Sugar

You can use brown granulated sugar anywhere you’d normally use regular brown sugar. It has less moisture, so it’s easier to sprinkle on food and get a more even mix. Grocery stores can sell granulated brown sugar right next to regular brown sugar, and with the right advertising, it will sell like hotcakes, especially for those who don’t know how to soften regular brown sugar – and there are many who don’t know the tricks.

Not only is it great for bulk uses such as in bakeries, food manufacturing plants, and restaurants, but it’s great to sprinkle on cereal, fruit, ice cream and pancakes – or any other recipe or dish that requires light brown sugar.

Other Types of Brown Sugar and Their Uses

Other types of brown sugar are available and are, in many cases, interchangeable. The darker the sugar, the sweeter the taste.

Light Brown Sugar: This sugar uses about 3.5 percent molasses and is commonly used in cakes, cookies, butterscotch pudding, bread, and caramel corn. It has a lighter flavor than medium and dark brown sugars and is the lightest in color.

Medium Brown Sugar: This sugar has more molasses but not as much as dark brown sugar. You can substitute medium brown sugar for light brown sugar in almost everything, including baked goods.

Dark Brown Sugar: This sugar has about 6.5 percent molasses. Because of the concentration of molasses, this sugar is better for recipes that require a deep flavor. It is often used in baked goods that have cloves, ginger, and / or cinnamon, such as chocolate cake or gingerbread.

Although recipes may call specifically for one or the other type of brown sugar, they are all interchangeable. However, a recipe that calls for light brown sugar will have a sweeter, more robust flavor if you use dark brown sugar. Dark brown sugar will also make your final product have a darker color. If you’ve ever had a hard time getting homemade chocolate chip cookies to brown evenly and keep a light-brown bottom, switch to dark brown sugar in the recipe.
